Spain: Cantabria

Spain: Cantabria

In reference to history or administrative divisions the Basque Country, Asturias and Cantabria are 3 distinct regions.  We group them here as they have geographically a lot in common, being quite green, as they receive the rain of the Atlantic, and from a touristic point of view they are often visited together.

The Basque Mountains rise between 1500 to 5000 feet, west of the Pyrenees’ foothills. Further west, the Cantabrian Cordillera includes the Picos de Europa, which reach 8000 feet. Snow-capped peaks are often no more than 30 miles from the ocean. Between the mountains and the coast lush meadows, apple orchards, maize, beans and dairy products are all part of the farming and agricultural life.  Salmon and trout abound in the torrents.

Cantabrian caves were the refuge of people living there in prehistoric times. Local people are still proud of their Asturian and Cantabrian ancestors who were never subdued by the Romans. They are considered as very active and hard working people. Folklore and traditions are still much alive and animated during festivities, with “Romerias” accompanied by the local bagpipe, the “gaita”, to celebrate sailors or shepherds performing the most ancient and traditional labors.
