Overview

The program starts with a five-day tour of Southern Spain and continues for four weeks in León, where students  take courses at the University of León. Students attend classes in the mornings, while afternoons and weekends are devoted to sightseeing, field trips, extracurricular activities, making new friends and living the Spanish way of life.

The program culminates with a three-day trip to Madrid. This summer study abroad program is sponsored by the Department of Languages and Cultures and the Office of International Education. The participants of this program have the expert support and guidance of the Department of Languages and Cultures faculty who travel with them.

Courses & Credits

Students will take a Spanish language placement test on the first day of classes and will be placed accordingly in their appropriate level. Students earn six credits in Spanish language and culture. Regardless of level, the credits will transfer as the following Molloy College courses: SPA 3300 Spanish Grammar and Composition, and SPA 3310 Spanish Conversation and Culture. Students may also take extracurricular classes such as Spanish Cooking and Spanish Dance. Students must attend 3 mandatory pre-departure meetings in preparation for the study abroad experience.

Tour Highlights

LEÓN
In partnership with the University of León, this program has its base in an ideal setting, the city of León. Found-
ed by the Romans and situated in northwestern Spain on the Way of Santiago, it has been traveled since the
Middle Ages by thousands of pilgrims every year. León,
boasting the most magnificent gothic cathedral in Spain,
is a small, lively and beautiful city that has something
for everyone: cultural events, outdoor markets, a relaxed
atmosphere and great tapas. To top it all, the inhabitants of this city are known for their hospitality and friendliness. During the four-week stay in León we will be visiting the landmarks of this city and nearby cities and
towns, as well as spectacular natural landscapes.

MADRID
Famous for its energy and vibrant atmosphere, Madrid
combines the most modern infrastructures of the 21st century and the economic financial and administrative
center of Spain, with its immense cultural and artistic legacy. In this capital city you can walk through Spain’s stirring history while strolling and admiring its bustling
streets, unique plazas and elegant parks. It is home to one of the most important art collections in the world, the Museo del Prado, and its contemporary counterpart, el Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, as well as the Museo
Thyssen Bornemisza.

ANDALUCÍA
In the south of Spain, Andalucía is a region of contrasts:
ancient cities founded by the Phoenicians and Romans, conquered by the Visigoths and the Arabs find them-
selves in a stunning backdrop of lush green river valleys, deserts, snow capped mountains, rolling olive groves,
and white towns perched on its mountains, as well as
amazing beaches. Andalucía has a rich Moorish/Arab
heritage, including masterpieces of Islamic architecture
such as la Alhambra in Granada (a fortress/palace with
a maze of rooms, fountains and gardens), the Alcazar in Sevilla (a castle with dazzling décor and lavish gardens) or the Mosque/Cathedral in Córdoba. Part of this heritage can also be found in its music and food. Besides its Arabic heritage, Andalucía has a wide variety of rich cultural, culinary and touristic experiences to offer.
