Spain occupies the largest part of the Iberian peninsula and, after Russia and France is the 3rd largest country in Europe. Isolated behind the long barrier formed by the Pyrenees Mountains, it extends to the South towards the African continent from which it is separated by a short straight of only 9 miles. Spain is a very mountainous country, the 2nd after Switzerland if we consider the average altitude, which is slightly over 2000 feet above sea level. The geography determines the 3 various climate zones. In the vast central plateau, the Meseta, the continental climate brings cruel summer heat and long rigorous winters. Along the Pyrenees, the Atlantic Coast and the Cantabrian sea is a much more humid climate. Then, in the East and South Coasts, including the south Atlantic provinces and the inland plains of Andalusia, the climate is typically Mediterranean. The country is divided into 17 different regions and 50 Provinces. Each of these 17 regions has great tourist attractions and are worth visiting:
